Constance Billard and St. Jude's do not exist — but the building fans line up to photograph absolutely does. The Gossip Girl school steps are one of the most requested stops on the Upper East Side, and finding them takes about a minute once you know the address.
The exterior used for both Constance Billard School for Girls and St. Jude's School for Boys is the Museum of the City of New York, at Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street. Its wide limestone staircase is where the uniforms, the headbands and the entire social order of the show were put on display between classes.
The production needed a facade that read as old money at a glance: symmetrical, institutional, unmistakably Fifth Avenue. A working museum gave the crew a grand entrance without disrupting a real school, and the steps gave the writers a stage where Blair could hold court and Serena could make an entrance.
The steps and the facade are public and free to photograph from the sidewalk. The museum itself is open to visitors and worth an hour if New York City history interests you, though nothing inside was used in the series.
Constance Billard is a composite rather than a copy. The show borrows the uniforms, the hierarchy and the calendar of Manhattan's long-established private schools, then heightens everything for television. No single real institution stands behind the storyline, which is exactly why the museum works so well as its face.
The school steps sit at the northern end of the Museum Mile, a straight run up Fifth Avenue from the Met Steps. Central Park is directly across the street, so the school, the Met and Bethesda Terrace can be seen comfortably in one loop.
On a guided Gossip Girl tour of NYC the school is sequenced with the other Upper East Side locations, your guide cues up the scenes that were shot on those steps, and you are shown exactly where to stand for the photograph everyone comes for.
Small groups, local guides and every stop in the right order — the Upper East Side, Central Park and the Met Steps in one afternoon.
